Celtic Defender Joins Rotherham

Rotherham United have completed the signing of young Celtic defender Lenny Agbaire.

The 20-year-old joins the English League One side on a three-year deal after the two clubs agreed an undisclosed fee.

Agbaire leaves Celtic without making a senior appearance for the first team but has gained experience elsewhere.

He spent last season on loan at Ayr United in the Scottish Championship, where he featured 16 times and played an important part in their push for promotion. Ayr made it to the play-offs, beating Partick Thistle in the first leg of their semi-final but losing the tie over two legs.

Agbaire is a product of Celtic’s academy and had been viewed as a promising talent within the club’s youth ranks. In 2023, he helped Celtic’s youngsters lift the Scottish FA Youth Cup, a campaign in which he played a central role in the team’s success.

Despite showing potential, Agbaire wasn’t able to break into the senior squad under Brendan Rodgers and spent the last year developing his game in the second tier of Scottish football. His loan spell with Ayr was seen as a valuable step in his progression, giving him a chance to test himself in a competitive environment.

Rotherham acted quickly to bring the defender south of the border and wasted no time getting him involved. Agbaire was included in the squad for their pre-season friendly against Harrogate Town today as the Millers continue preparations for the new season.

This move gives Agbaire a fresh start and a clear opportunity to establish himself in senior football. Rotherham  are looking to build a squad capable of winning promotion, and the young defender will now look to earn his place in their plans moving forward.

Celtic, meanwhile, continue to the squad as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.
