Celtic Defender Joins A-League Champions

Melbourne City have strengthened their defence with the signing of 20-year-old centre-back Liam Bonetig, who joins the club from Celtic on a three-year deal.

Bonetig has penned a contract that keeps him at the reigning A-League champions until the end of the 2027-28 season. The move brings the young defender back to Australian football after spending time developing in Scotland with Celtic’s B team.

While in Glasgow, Bonetig featured prominently at reserve level and gained experience in the UEFA Youth League, showcasing his ability against some of Europe’s most talented young players.

Originally a product of the Western Sydney Wanderers academy, Bonetig made the move abroad to further his development but now returns with more polish and maturity to his game.

His height and composure on the ball mark him out as a player with real potential, and he is expected to challenge for a first-team role in Melbourne City’s backline.

City have built a strong squad in recent seasons, and the addition of Bonetig suggests a continued focus on blending emerging talent with proven quality.

The signing also reflects Melbourne City’s long-term planning, with Bonetig arriving at an age where he can develop further while contributing immediately if called upon.

His exposure to a demanding football culture in Scotland, particularly at a club the size of Celtic, will stand him in good stead as he adapts to the demands of senior football in the A-League.

For Bonetig, it’s a chance to take the next step in his career. For Melbourne City, it’s another move that strengthens their title defence and builds depth in a key area of the pitch.
