Celtic Daft Cup Hero Joins Famous Parkhead Company

St Johnstone star Shaun Rooney scored the winning goal for his club in the Scottish Cup final to complete the unlikeliest of doubles.

After the match, the Celtic daft defender was put on a list next to some of his idols; Henrik Larsson and Tom Rogic.

Both players scored in the League Cup and Scottish Cup triumphs in the one season and now Rooney can lay claim to doing exactly the same.

Speaking to SunSport, Rooney spoke about his Celtic idols:

“That’s not bad company, especially the one name – Larsson. I’ve never been compared to Larsson and I never will be!

“I remember his final game and Seville too. Then when he came back to Celtic Park for testimonials.

“I probably saw a good three years of him and then he went to Barcelona and Manchester United.

“I’ll take big Tom Rogic too. He is more recent. It’s a great stat to have. Hopefully I can score in two finals again next season!

“My dad reads more into that sort of stuff than me. I’m not really a big fan of it.

“Maybe after my career I will look back on all that. Both my cup final goals were good but I’d say this was my favourite.

“I saw on Twitter the other day it was 10,000-1 for us to win both cups. That’s impossible really isn’t it?”

I don’t think people fully appreciate what we have just witnessed. For a club out with Glasgow to win both trophies in one season on a shoestring budget is quite incredible.

Nobody would have been able to predict this for St Johnstone at the start of the season.

Rooney has done himself and his family proud by playing and scoring in both.

Of course, he’ll take being on the list with Larsson, but the lad seems humble and taken aback by the trophy triumph.

It will be up to Celtic to rain on their parade next season as we look to reclaim some of that silverware we held for a long time before last season.
