Celtic’s £630k Compensation Bill

CELTIC’s annual accounts have been discussed throughout the week since they dropped.

We had Forbes writer and Celtic fan Mike Wood give us his verdict on the Hoops finances on Wednesday. The writer came to some troubling conclusions on the decline of the club’s finances but did admit Celtic have managed their losses well, relying on the fans to blindly support them through the pandemic.

One major expense that we’ve noticed going through the figures is the cash spent on contract terminations.

£630,000 was spent on contract terminations.

You have to imagine a major slice of that cash belongs to Neil Lennon and would be a massive reason why the manager never voluntarily walked from his role when it was clear his goose was cooked.

The year prior, Celtic only paid out £80k in compensation payments.

Nicky Hammond was a high profile summer exit as well and it’s likely the former head of football operations got some sort of payoff.

Peter Lawwell was on a rolling contract that was worth around £1.2m – it’s understood the former chief exec did not take compensation.

MailSport’s January report claiming Neil Lennon was due a substantial payout does chime with the figures released officially by the club.
