Ross Doohan is closing in on a return to Celtic and now the 27-year-old has also been drafted into the Scotland squad ahead of their friendly against Liechtenstein.

Doohan, who left Aberdeen at the end of the season, is expected to rejoin the Hoops as third-choice goalkeeper, filling the slot vacated by Scott Bain following his move to Falkirk. The shot-stopper previously came through the ranks at Celtic and now looks set for a Parkhead reunion under Brendan Rodgers.

The call-up to the national team comes in unusual circumstances. Cieran Slicker endured a nightmare debut in Friday night’s 3-1 defeat to Iceland at Hampden, with the goalkeeper at fault for all three goals. Slicker, who managed just nine minutes of senior football for Ipswich this season, was only introduced after first-choice Angus Gunn was forced off injured. Robbie McCrorie was also ruled out after picking up a knock in the warm-up.
With limited options remaining, Steve Clarke has turned to Doohan, who has represented Scotland at various youth levels but is now in line for a first senior involvement.
Doohan played a solid role as back-up at Pittodrie and now looks set to provide depth and stability behind Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo at Celtic.
It’s a big week for the Ayrshire-born keeper, with a second chance at Celtic on the cards and now the potential for a long-awaited Scotland debut.
