Celtic BBC Ban Set to Be Tested

On Thursday, Brendan Rodgers was interviewed by various media outlets, including Sky Sports, STV, and others. However, BBC Scotland was noticeably absent. The reason for their absence remains unclear, but many speculate it’s a response to Tom English’s dismissive comments about Rodgers’ appointment.

The Celtic manager, who is making a competitive return to the club, shared his aspirations and sentiments for the upcoming season. He also discussed injury updates and hinted at the possibility of recruiting additional players within the remaining four weeks of the transfer window.

The interview, led by Sky Sports, was uploaded to Celtic’s YouTube channel. Despite their absence, BBC Scotland updated their followers via Twitter.

Tom English, who had previously expressed disdain for Rodgers’ appointment, further criticised the former Leicester City boss in an Irish outlet podcast.

However, this is where things get interesting. SPFL regulations mandate clubs to hold pre and post-match media conferences with the club manager and a player. BBC Scotland holds television and radio rights, giving them access to the players and manager pre and post-match for Radio Scotland and Sportscene.

If the interviews are not granted, it could escalate the situation and allow the BBC to lodge an official complaint against the club to the SPFL. However, they would likely not have a leg to stand on, as the Ibrox club snubbed the state broadcaster for the best part of a decade.
