Celtic Backup Would Walk Into Ibrox Side – Pundit’s Damning Verdict

BEN SIEGRIST joined Celtic this summer on a free transfer, with the goalkeeper struggling to displace Joe Hart so far.

After his contract expired at Dundee United, Celtic pounced and signed the goalkeeper on a four-year deal. There had been some links for a couple of years, but nothing had ever surfaced. The transfer came out of the blue, announced late one evening during the summer.

Charlie Nicholas believes that The Rangers made a mistake not signing the Swiss goalie, as the club has a goalkeeping crisis. McGregor has been poor this season, but Mclaughlin hasn’t shown enough to merit a starting role.

As quoted by Football Scotland, Nicholas said;

“I remember last season there was some talk of Rangers being interested in Benji Siegrist. Well if they had properly followed that up he would be the No1 at Ibrox right now, rather than on the Celtic bench.

“I was amazed – and still am – that Gio van Bronckhorst didn’t go out and get a new goalkeeper. It was the one glaring area that was his weakest and it was shown by Allan McGregor’s awful performance against Liverpool. It was a humiliation, the stark reality of where they are.

“I do have sympathy for van Bronckhorst because he has had to deal with long-term injuries such as Ianis Hagi and John Souttar – and he now has Connor Goldson and Ryan Jack out too.

“There have been quite a lot of rumblings about his future. But there is no sense in Rangers shoving him out. A new manager’s main aim would be to compete domestically, which van Bronckhorst is already doing.”

It’s quite amusing to watch as a Celtic fan, knowing that the two best goalkeepers in Scotland are at your club.

You feel that Siegrist will be handed a favour few chances this season, with Joe Hart already making a few costly mistakes. The English goalie is reaching the twilight of his career, with Siegrist still got a few years left in him.
