Celtic Avoid Transfer Disaster After Pulling Defender Deal

Last summer, Celtic had everything in place to bring centre-back Rivaldo Coetzee to Glasgow.

A fee and the player’s contract was agreed, he was a Celtic player – pending a medical.

However, something showed up during the South African’s medical that Celtic flagged straight away; they immediately pulled the plug on the deal with Ajax Cape Town.

Celtic fans were left disappointed, but that disappointment turned to confusion when just days later Rivaldo made a move to Sundowns FC.

The defender made the switch much to the bemusement of a lot of people but a year on Celtic’s decision is fully vindicated.

Rivaldo is yet to kick a ball for his new club and has been on the sidelines with a number of injuries since last summer.

A Sundown Official spoke about the player’s situation.

“We have an issue with his foot. Recently he has been positive and bubbly.

“The doctors are saying blood doesn’t flow into the area where he was injured. That makes his healing process cumbersome because when the blood is not going to where you are injured the wound will stay open. But I’m not saying he has a wound.”

Celtic are still looking for a centre-back a year later if the right one comes along.

The emergence of Kristoffer Ajer has meant the position isn’t as urgent as it once was. If Boyata leaves this summer then Celtic will have to look at the situation.
