Ange Postecoglou’s Comments Not Directed at Scottish Media

Ange Postecoglou’s comments on Tom Rogic were well publicised on Friday after the Celtic manager was quizzed on what was going on with Tom.

The former Celtic midfielder has went off the grid since leaving Celtic – even ignoring his Socceroos boss Graham Arnold.

When asked about Tom, Ange replied in typical Ange fashion:

“I think Tom’s fine mate. Has anyone spoken to Tom? No one spoke to him when he was here for 10 years either, that’s Tom!

“I’d be more concerned if he was out there talking to people.

“Leave him alone, he’s fine.”

To add a bit of context to these comments from the Celtic boss, it appears he’s not just speaking directly to the interviewer here but sleeting it be known to a wider audience.

Tom’s silence surrounding the Australian national team has irked the Socceroos boss and his closest allies. One of those men is Robbie Slater, a former Australian international who can be quite cozy with Graham Arnold.

Back in June, Robbie wrote this piece below for the Australian Telegraph about Tom, having no idea what the issue is surrounding the former Celtic man. ‘Explain or miss the plane’. Robbie goes onto name the squad he would take to the World Cup, and laughably, Tom isn’t there.

It’s entirely plausible Robbie had been briefed by the current Socceroos management before writing the article. Risking ‘squad harmony’ by including one of their best players for the World Cup. A guy that’s flown thousands of miles over his career to turn out for his country – utter nonsense.

Slater was also hyper critical of Ange towards the end of his tenure as Australia boss. Ange has spoken about being under appreciated while still in the Socceroos job.

The Celtic manager is so plugged in to football and his country, there’s no way he hasn’t seen or heard the noise being made by Slater and Arnold over his former bhoy Tom.

I believe his comments on Friday weren’t directed at the Scottish media but further afield. Tom doesn’t need anyone to fight his battles, Ange will be the first to recognise that, however, when given the opportunity, the Celtic boss has used his platform to subtly shut down Slater and co.
