The Celtic goalkeeper, wearing the armband in the absence of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, led by example as Denmark earned a deserved lead heading into the second leg in Lisbon. It was Rasmus Hojlund who provided the breakthrough, coming off the bench to fire home the only goal of the game.

In a match that saw Denmark frustrate a Portugal side packed with attacking talent, Schmeichel kept a clean sheet and showed his experience in managing the backline. The 38-year-old looked sharp throughout, ensuring Denmark took a lead back with them.

Cristiano Ronaldo, now 40 and still spearheading the Portuguese attack, was largely anonymous throughout the 90 minutes. The Al-Nassr striker struggled to influence the game, with Denmark’s disciplined defending leaving him frozen out.

It could have been a two-goal lead for Denmark, but Christian Eriksen missed from the penalty spot.

The second leg is set for Sunday in Lisbon, where Denmark will aim to complete the job and book their place in the Nations League semi-finals.

The ‘keeper will be looking to captain his side as they put out the winners from the first edition of the Nations League.
