Celtic’s European adventure for the 2023/24 season came to an end on Wednesday evening as they defeated Feyenoord by two goals to one. It was a satisfying victory, although it didn’t make any difference to the Hoops’ final standing in Group E.
The Bhoys finished bottom of the section and post-match, Callum McGregor admitted the level was difficult. He said (Glasgow Times): “That is just the level. You see it earlier in the week as Manchester United struggled to get through and that’s a huge club all around the world. The level is not easy by any stretch.”

Along with Celtic, United finished bottom of their section with just four points. Despite spending 181 million more euros than the Scottish champions, Erik Ten Hag’s had the same outcome as them.
McGregor obviously thinks this shows how tough the level is, however, comparisons work both ways. Indeed in the same group as the Red Devils, Copenhagen finished second. They spent five million fewer euros than Brendan Rodgers’ team in the summer, which goes to show that succeeding in the Champions League is quite possible for clubs the size of Celtic.
