Although he is currently injured, Celtic captain Callum McGregor is usually as reliable for Scotland as he is for Celtic.
Indeed, the Hoops’ skipper is one of the most consistent performers in Steve Clarke’s side, regularly churning out top-level displays on the international stage.
He won’t be included in the squad for the upcoming internationals that will be announced later today because of his current situation, but that hasn’t stopped him from being nominated for the Scottish Football Writers’ Association Men’s International Player of the Year Award.
The treble-winner has been put up for the award alongside two English Premier League players and one from the Championship; John McGinn, Scott McTominay, and Angus Gunn.
The two former have particularly impressed for Scotland over the past 12 months, each playing a big hand in their qualification for Euro 2024.
McGregor doesn’t contribute as much as McGinn and McTominay in terms of goals, but the sheer drive and energy he brings to the midfield is easily noticeable when he isn’t there.
He may not win the award up against some prestigious names, but the sheer fact the 30-year-old has been nominated is a testament to the high standards with which he holds himself.
