Celtic captain Callum McGregor thinks central defender Stephen Welsh was ‘outstanding’ in Sunday afternoon’s goalless draw with Dundee United.
The Hoops headed to Tannadice in search of an early Christmas present but flattered to deceive with a lacklustre performance, which left much to be desired.

Brendan Rodgers’ men registered just three shots on target throughout the 90 in one of their poorest domestic performances of the season so far.
In fairness to the manager, he was forced into several changes amid a wealth of injuries and illness.
Numerous fringe players were drafted in, and skipper McGregor was particularly impressed by one: Stephen Welsh.
The centre-half made his first appearance of the season in the city of discovery and coped well as he helped his side to a clean sheet.
Welsh’s performance caught the eye of his captain: “Welshy (Stephen Welsh) hasn’t played for a while and was outstanding,” said McGregor (The Celtic Way).
“He was really good on the ball and the two boys dealt really well with the duels at the top of the pitch well.”
Welsh is in a Tough Predicament
Coming back into the team, especially from the start, is no easy feat when a player hasn’t taken to the field all season. For that, Welsh deserves credit for his performance.
Although the Celtic rearguard was rarely tested all game, he managed to keep Scottish Premiership top scorer Sam Dalby quiet throughout the match, too.
If Cameron Carter-Vickers and Auston Trusty return for Boxing Day, Welsh will likely drop out, but that is the harsh reality of football and being a squad player at a club like Celtic.
