Callum McGregor Explains Why He Doesn’t Use Social Media

Perhaps one of the key ways in which footballers communicate with fans nowadays is through social media.

Supporters getting an inside insight into the lives of their heroes is something that 20 years ago, was unimaginable.

Now, however, it is the norm but some Celtic players have yet to officially take to platforms like X, Instagram, and Facebook.

James Forrest is one with Callum McGregor another. The Hoops skipper doesn’t bother with social media which for a 30-year-old in the modern day, is admittedly strange.

McGregor is focused purely on his football and his lack of screen time is shown by how well he leads the champions.

When Scott Brown left Celtic in 2021, a sizeable hole was left in the squad but the Scotland international has more than stepped up to the plate.

He continually drives the elite standards in the Parkhead dressing room, ensuring Brendan Rodgers’ messages reach the players.

The five-time treble-winner knows what Celtic means, and reckons his job of captain is difficult enough without having social media to think about.

McGregor was asked if he takes motivation from what rival players say online. “I’m not on social media, so I don’t see it”, he said (Glasgow Times).

“We can only focus on what we are doing, and I think the minute you take your eye off the ball, either personally or with what is happening inside the club, then you are too busy worrying about what is going on elsewhere.

“My job is hard enough as it is to deal with what is going on inside our building, and trying to prepare the players and myself and all of these different things.

“So, to be honest, the noise and anything that is published or on social media, that is the reason I’m not on it, because I don’t want to take on any more energy away from what I’m actually trying to do and achieve inside our own club.”
