Brendan Rodgers Speaks Out After Arne Engels Hit by Coin at Ibrox

Brendan Rodgers has discussed the condition of Arne Engels after the Hoops midfielder was struck by a coin at Ibrox this afternoon in the Glasgow Derby.

With Engels getting ready to take a corner kick in the 86th minute of the game, the Hoops’ record signing was hit in yet another sign of a lack of safety for Celtic players at Ibrox.

Referee Don Robertson took the coin to the fourth official, who then handed it to the police as evidence.

Rodgers was rightfully damning in his indictment of the incident, describing it as ‘not great’ for the game” (The Herald).

With the Irishman revealing that if Engels was okay after such a horrible incident in the game, he said: (The Herald),”Yes, thankfully, [if] it was an inch lower he’d have been [hit] right in the eye.

“But yes, I think he’s OK. It’s not obviously great for the game, but yes, he’s OK.”

It was a horrible moment for all watching the game, not only Celtic supporters but anyone who loves football, as no supporter wants to see any player struck by a flying object during a game.

At the end of the day, Engels is a footballer simply trying to do his job, and in any other job in the world, no one would expect such a horrific thing to happen to them.

What the punishment will be for Rangers after the game by Scottish football’s governing bodies remains to be seen. However, incidents like these have happened at Ibrox before in recent years, showing a clear problem with security at the game, which cannot keep Celtic players safe in the Glasgow Derby.

With no Celtic supporters still at the game, the safety of the Hoops at Ibrox still remains a serious issue, and Rangers should really take a look at themselves to solve the problem.
