Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers recently addressed the situation surrounding Swedish defender Gustaf Lagerbielke, hinting at a possible departure during this transfer window.
Lagerbielke, who joined Celtic from IF Elfsborg on a five-year deal in August 2023, has struggled to secure regular playing time.
Rodgers acknowledged the defender’s hard work and positive attitude despite limited opportunities. The manager also interestingly confirmed he blocked Gustaf’s January exit from the club.

“Gus has shown a terrific attitude. He didn’t get so much game time last season but he’s got his head down,” Rodgers told RecordSport. “He had the chance to go on loan in January but we needed to keep him due to the injuries we had in that position. But he’s worked very hard over pre-season and we’ll see what happens.
“You see the players are happy and working well, but all players want to play. If they can’t get the game time with us, they may look elsewhere. In this moment he’s working very hard and when is asked, he comes in and does well.”
Since his arrival, Lagerbielke has made six appearances in the Scottish Premiership. His tenure at the club also includes a notable performance in the UEFA Champions League, where he scored his first goal in a 2-1 victory over Feyenoord. Despite these moments, consistent first-team action has eluded him, prompting speculation about his future.
The Swedish defender, who was signed for around £3 million, was brought in following the departure of Carl Starfelt to Celta Vigo. His five-year contract, set to last until May 31, 2028, reflects the club’s initial long-term plans for him.
As Rodgers contemplates his defensive options, the future remains uncertain for Lagerbielke at Celtic. With the manager not ruling out a move, it will be interesting to see how the remainder of the transfer window unfolds for the Swedish international.
