Following Celtic’s heart-wrenching defeat at Parkhead, manager Brendan Rodgers weighed in on the team’s performance, highlighting missed opportunities as a significant factor.
Celtic had ample opportunities to get themselves in the lead in the second half, but failed to make their chances count.
In the end, it was Lazio who were more clinical, despite having less chances. At this level, that’s what happens when chances aren’t taken.
“Yes, we missed too many chances. That’s something that’s important at this level,” Rodgers admitted live in TNT Sports. He acknowledged the team’s ability to penetrate and create opportunities but lamented the lack of finishing touch. “We get into some really good areas but that’s about quality and sadly we didn’t quite have it in certain moments of the game.”
However, Rodgers was quick to defend his squad, emphasising their effort and commitment against a formidable Lazio side boasting top-tier technical talent. “But I can’t be critical of this group of players. What they’ve given the game against a good side with some top-quality technical players, we should have had more from that game.”
Rodgers’ comments reflect a balanced perspective, recognizing areas for improvement while also appreciating the team’s overall effort. As the season unfolds, the focus will undoubtedly be on refining that final touch in front of goal to ensure that such missed opportunities don’t become a recurring theme.
Celtic’s European hopes have taken a slash after the loss to Lazio, now three points adrift from Feyenoord in third place, with Atletico still to play home and away. It’s going to have to take something special for Celtic to turn the group around.
