Brendan Rodgers Outlines The “Beauty” of Matt O’Riley

It has been a sensational season for Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley. The Dane has taken his game to an entirely new level in 2023/24, proving to be an ever-reliable asset for the Hoops.

O’Riley has played 46 times for the Bhoys in all competitions this campaign, registering 16 goals and 17 assists in the process.

Some of his strikes have come at crucial times while the 23-year-old seems to have got the knack for scoring against Rangers, bagging in back-to-back Glasgow derbies at Ibrox and Parkhead.

Brendan Rodgers’ return to Celtic seems to have only benefitted O’Riley who is thriving.

Despite signing a new contract at the end of September last year, there has been understandable transfer interest in the former MK Dons man from two top-six sides in the English Premier League.

Whether he will be wearing green and white hoops this time next year remains to be seen and for the last three games of the campaign, supporters should enjoy watching O’Riley while they can.

Rodgers thinks he has brought a consistency that has been lacking in the team this season.

He said: [RecordSport] “He’s been absolutely phenomenal in his consistency. I think if we’ve lacked anything as a team, it’s probably that.

“From an individual perspective, if you look at his goal return, someone said to me he scored his first goal for the club last January, to see his numbers now is a huge testament to himself.

“Matt is 23-years-old. If he looks after himself and plays to 35, he’s still got another 12 years in the game.

“He’s only really at the very beginning of this, what they call the asset age. Matt has so many great years ahead of him.

“The beauty with Matt is he’s a learner, he wants to improve and develop. As long as he maintains the hunger, he’ll continue to do that.”
