Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was frank in assessing the Hoops’ performance in the Glasgow derby despite a 2-1 win.
Rodgers fairly spoke about how the side can improve.
With the Irishman not even at the club for a year, he is still putting his imprint on the squad.
Rodgers said: [Sky Sports],“We miss the penalty and it knocks a bit of the energy out of our game. We had other chances, we didn’t take them and of course then, whenever it is 2-1 at the end of the game there’s tension. It’s a brilliant day.
“We should do better, let’s not hide away from that. It’s happened a few times. That’s the downside to the performance but the great aspect of that is, there is a lot of progress we can make in that moment when we’re playing against 10 men. It’s just being tidier with the ball, keeping the ball and I respect as well it’s a really hot day.
Rodgers clearly sets high standards, and maintaining that can be difficult throughout games.
Ultimately, that is where he will look to improve the team next season: in being more clinical in seeing out games, and that will come with greater squad depth.
With more games in the Champions League next season, Rodgers will be hoping that he is backed in the transfer market to a level not seen since Martin O’Neill.
That would be fair from him to expect that, as he has shown this season, particularly in big games in the Champions League and against Rangers, that his coaching methods are particularly successful in the biggest games.
Financially, Celtic are in a strong position with a strong manager.
It is time to seize new players and not leave business to transfer deadline day, as we have seen so many times over the years.
