Brendan Rodgers has hinted that James Forrest may not be handed a starting role against St Mirren at Celtic Park tomorrow, despite the winger’s standout performance at Pittodrie midweek.
Forrest, who was named man of the match in Celtic’s sensational 5-1 win over Aberdeen, is still searching for his first goal of the campaign. Remarkably, he has scored in every one of the previous 15 seasons in the Hoops – a run that highlights both his consistency and longevity.

With just two games left this season , there is a growing sense of anticipation among supporters keen to see the 33-year-old maintain that scoring streak.
However, when asked directly whether Forrest should play this weekend to give him the chance to find the net, Rodgers initially laughed off the suggestion. During a light-hearted exchange with a reporter, he was told: (STV Sport), “I know I’m being sentimental, but surely James Forrest has to play this weekend and give him that chance to get that goal.”
When pushed again, Rodgers replied, “No,” after previously asking the reporter himself, “Should he play the weekend, do you think?” – to which the journalist replied: “I think so. I’m saying I’m sentimental, give him that chance.”
Rodgers’ response was telling. “I’m not,” he said with a smile. “He doesn’t have to score – it would be great if he does. He’s definitely trying.
“He’s getting to some great areas and it was unfortunate in the first half [against Aberdeen] when he chopped inside with his left foot. But his performance level is really, really high. If it comes, great. If it doesn’t, he’s still performing and contributing for the team.”

The 5-1 win over Aberdeen was one of Celtic’s most complete performances of the season, with Forrest at the heart of the Hoops’ constant attacking threat. Despite not finding the net, he tormented the Dons defence and showed all the qualities that have made him a Hoops stalwart over the past decade and a half.
Whether he gets the nod tomorrow remains to be seen, but Forrest’s impact has not gone unnoticed. As Rodgers pointed out, goal or no goal, the winger continues to contribute brilliantly when called upon.
With St Mirren coming to Celtic Park, the opportunity is there for Forrest to continue his strong run of form – if he makes the starting XI. One thing is certain: should he score, the noise inside the stadium will speak volumes about how much it means to him and the Celtic support.
