Brendan Rodgers Grants Celtic Players Mini Break after Cup Final Win

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has given his players a mini break after their Premier Sports Cup final victory over Rangers at Hampden yesterday.

It was a topsy-turvy affair which was eventually decided on spot-kicks, Daizen Maeda netting what turned out to be the winning penalty to bring the trophy back to the east end of Glasgow.

Things didn’t go particularly to plan for the Hoops initially, with Nedim Bajrami giving Rangers the lead just before half-time. Greg Taylor and Maeda, though, responded to put Brendan Rodgers’ men ahead by the hour mark.

Mohamed Diomande then equalised with 15 minutes to go, and although Nicolas Kuhn looked to have won it late on, Danilo’s header took the game to extra time.

3-3 after 120 minutes, Celtic prevailed on spot-kicks, and after their toiling efforts throughout over two hours of football, the players were rightly rewarded with a few days off.

Indeed, in his post-match press conference yesterday, boss Rodgers admitted his men aren’t due back in at Lennoxtown until Wednesday, signalling some time off: “It’s about celebrating this one, celebrating it well,” he said (The Celtic Way).

“Be with your families and enjoy it. Then we’re back in on Wednesday, getting ready for Dundee United. And that is it. That is it.

“You have to enjoy these moments. It’s such a special win for us today. And we’ll now get ready for our next game midweek.”

After the players and manager have a few days to bask in the glory of yet another Glasgow derby cup final triumph, full focus turns to this Sunday’s trip to face Dundee United at Tannadice.

It’s back to league action for the Hoops, ahead of a gruelling schedule over the festive period. Indeed, in the 10 days from Sunday until the next Glasgow derby on January 2, the Celts have four games alone.

That is currently on the back burner for now, however, with reflections rightly on yesterday.
