Celtic’s squad for their 2023/24 Champions League campaign was revealed on Tuesday. Two days later, Brendan Rodgers gave his reasoning behind why he picked who he did in it.
In the squad, there were some notable omissions such as Maik Nawrocki and Alexandro Bernabei, although Rodgers has given reasons behind their lack of inclusion. He said (Football Scotland): “It was exactly that (Scales in and Bernabei not because the Irishman can cover left and centre-back). Obviously you’re looking at a number of things, you have eight associated home-trained players which leaves you 17. So you’re then having to strategically look it at and the players that are going to come in and the players where you need cover.”

Along with looking at who can play where and the rules regarding homegrown players, Rodgers has said that injuries played a big factor in his decisions. He said: “And then obviously you’re weighing up injuries as well. How long are they going to be out for? And obviously, the likes of Maik will be out for a period of time.”
Trying to pick a Champions League squad is somewhat like solving a puzzle for the Celtic gaffer. Rodgers has a wealth of talent available to him, but not all of it can be utilised in the Champions League.
Those who weren’t included will be disappointed, but the Hoops’ support will get right behind those who were. Feyenoord lie in wait next Tuesday evening at de Kuip as the Scottish champions look to get off to the perfect start in Europe’s premier club competition.
