Brendan Rodgers has highlighted the reason why he believes his side were unable to take all three points against Dundee United at Tannadice this afternoon in the Hoops’ 0-0 draw.
With the Irishman making five changes ahead of the game, it was clear that the starting 11 was a drop-off in quality from the side that defeated Rangers on penalties last Sunday to win the Premier Sports Cup.
However, with players like Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda, and Callum McGregor all starting, Rodgers was clearly hopeful that he would have enough to still emerge victorious, especially with players of McGregor’s experience.
He said: (Sky Sports), “We arrived in all the areas that we wanted to and were there often enough, but my feeling in the game was that we didn’t work the keeper enough.
“We had so many opportunities where we were in those areas, but we never hit the target.
“We passed the ball well and connected the game, especially in the first half, but I didn’t think we worked the keeper enough.”
Looking at the starting 11 ahead of the game, Hoops supporters themselves would have been well aware that it was unlikely to be a vintage performance from Celtic this afternoon.
However, they would have wanted the team to still find a way to win the game.
Unfortunately, that simply wasn’t to be, with a lack of killer instinct in the final third, as Kyogo and Maeda were both not quite at the standards that fans have come to expect in recent years.
All around the team, it was clear that there was a lack of attacking threat.
They did keep the ball well enough during the game; however, with Yang Hyun-jun starting on the right wing, he lacked the quality that Nicolas Kuhn, for example, would have brought if he were fit enough to start.

This appears to be an area of the team where Celtic will look to strengthen next month.
Yang has shown glimpses of promise in his time at the club, however, he has never been consistently able to deliver goals and assists at the level that other players in the team do.
This afternoon was another example of Yang underwhelming and failing to impress the Hoops supporters when they needed him to be a difference maker.
