Paulo Bernardo’s permanent move to Celtic was finally confirmed last night as the midfielder signed a bumper five-year deal with the Scottish champions.

Last season, the 22-year-old’s loan spell in Glasgow was productive. Bernardo made 33 appearances across all competitions and performed well enough to warrant a £3.5m fee being shelled out on his services.
A goal in the New Year Glasgow derby last term adorned Bernardo to the support with his last-minute drive in the Scottish Cup final doing his reputation among the Parkhead faithful no harm.
Brendan Rodgers will hope the Portuguese under-21 internationalist can come up with even more impactful moments in 2024/25, but the manager recently revealed that he might not come straight into the team.
While Bernardo was with Benfica for pre-season, he didn’t get any friendly minutes, which could play to his detriment.
“I don’t think he’ll be match fit”, said the boss (Celtic TV).
“If you haven’t had the games like we’ve had and built our fitness through then that’s going to take a little bit of time.
“He’s a naturally fit boy but obviously the football speed and fitness can take a little bit of time.”
Those fans who were hoping for a second Bernardo debut this weekend will be disappointed.
Seeing him play on Flag Day would have been pleasing, but supporters will have to remain patient to see Celtic’s only outfield summer signing so far take to the field.
