Brendan Rodgers has expressed his delight following the player’s decision to commit his long-term future to Celtic, praising the club’s proactive approach to securing key players on extended contracts.

Johnston, who has been a standout performer since joining in December 2022,put pen to paper on a contract until 2029.

Speaking about the deal, Rodgers told CeltsAreHere during Friday’s press conference:

“Really pleased. The club are really good on that side, getting players committed long-term to the club; of course, they won’t always stay here, but it protects the asset.

“But all the players sign with the intention of being here for a longer period, and none more so than Ali because he absolutely loves being a Celtic player. I’ve really enjoyed my time working with him, and I can see his development, he’s got so many attributes on and off the pitch that help this club. So delighted he’s signed.”

Johnston’s extension is another signal of Celtic’s commitment to retaining and developing top talent. The Canadian international’s performances this season, including his contributions of goals and assists from the right-back position, have cemented his status as a key figure in Rodgers’ squad.

Fans will be equally thrilled to see Johnston’s dedication to the club, as his long-term deal ensures Celtic’s defensive stability while preserving his value for the future.

He’s a fan favourite for a reason.

The way he conducts himself on and off the pitch is exemplary.

He’ll look to make his 11th league start of the season, after he made his 50th and 51st Canadian national team appearances over the break. That’s an impressive number of games for his country, only making his debut in 2021.
