Brendan Rodgers Calls for League Expansion Amid SPFL Restructure Talks

Brendan Rodgers has offered his take on the SPFL’s league reform discussions, making it clear he would favour an expanded Scottish Premiership over a reduction in teams.

The SPFL’s Competitions Working Group has been exploring several restructuring options in light of increased fixture congestion, especially with Scottish clubs taking on more European fixtures under UEFA’s new competition formats. Among the models under discussion are a 10-team top flight—which would scrap the current top-six split—retaining the 12-team system, or expanding to 14 or 16 clubs.

The aim of any reform would be to reduce the domestic load on clubs participating in Europe, particularly during the play-off rounds and group stage commitments. A key change already confirmed is that clubs involved in the UEFA play-off round next season will be allowed to postpone one Premiership fixture—something Celtic are expected to benefit from.

But while the 10-team model is being considered to cut down the number of games, Rodgers is firmly against any move to make the league smaller.

“I have just heard that, I haven’t seen that but someone mentioned the possibility of it getting smaller or increasing,” said the Celtic boss to Clyde 1 SSB

“I certainly don’t think it needs to get smaller. If it goes any way I think there is still a notion for me that we could bring a few more teams into the league.

“Clearly, there is maybe issues around TV revenue or money but I think from a football perspective, I always felt an increase of the teams in the league would help.

“If I had a choice, you’d play a team home and away and that would be that, but the league is the way that it is at the moment and it’s nice that there is certain items are being looked at but it is what it is and we have to deal with that.”

Rodgers’ comments align with those who feel the repetitive nature of the current fixture list—where teams can face each other up to six times a season—is a turn-off for fans and players alike. An expanded league, in theory, would freshen up the schedule, promote variety, and offer more opportunity for clubs outside the traditional top tier to grow. However, any change would need wide-ranging approval, including backing from 11 of the 12 Premiership clubs, 75% of Premiership and Championship teams, and 75% of all 42 SPFL members.
