Kris Boyd believes there’s justification for Celtic’s board holding off on further spending, insisting Brendan Rodgers has already been heavily backed in the transfer market.
Last summer saw Celtic fork out £6m for Auston Trusty, £9.5m on Adam Idah and £11m on Arne Engels. They’ve not really lived up to their price tag, and the defender and midfielder have found themselves on the benhc for both of Celtic’s opening games, while Adam Idah would probably join them if there was some better competition up front.
Speaking after Celtic’s win over Aberdeen, the former Rangers striker said he could see both sides of the current debate over Rodgers’ public frustrations about recruitment.
“I can understand both sides of it,” Boyd said to SunSport. “I wouldn’t be sitting here taking Brendan Rodgers’ side. I wouldn’t be sitting here taking the football club’s side because he has spent a fortune.
“You only need to go back to yesterday as well. Arnie Engels on the bench, Trusty’s on the bench. And I’ll add Idah – he is struggling. There is no getting away from it. Last season he obviously got goals and had an impact on the team, but the first two games of this season, I’ve yet to see that.”
Brendan Rodgers has made his transfer frustrations clear over the past few weeks, but when he faced the press after the match against Aberdeen he was quite cryptic in his words. He claimed that there were some people who didn’t want him at Celtic, but it’s not clear exactly what he meant by that.
On the transfer front, he was clear that he wanted some players at the top end of the pitch, but had no news as he stood there. He then said: “I want Celtic to live in the best possible place….For me that is signing players at the top end of the pitch, but I can’t magic them there”.
Hopefully, we see some movement in the coming weeks.
