It never seemed to work out for Vasilis Barkas at Celtic. The Greek goalkeeper was brought in ahead of the Hoops’ ten in a row push but the lack of success in that campaign seemed to transcend into his overall time in Glasgow.
Despite managerial change, Barkas remained unsuccessful and spent the recent 2022/23 season on loan at FC Utrecht in the Netherlands where he seemed to impress. He came back to Celtic this summer, though, and his contract was terminated.

Now a free agent, Barkas is on the hunt for a new club and according to Gazetta (via @HellasFooty on Twitter), he could be set to return to Utrecht. It is said the side who finished seventh in the Eredivisie last season were satisfied with Barkas’ displays and have offered him a two year deal. Talks are at an ‘advanced stage’.
This news may be disappointing for Celtic. If they didn’t release Barkas, they could’ve got some extra funds for his return to Utrecht. Getting him off the books, though, was a priority and now, he is moving onto pastures new.
