Celtic’s transfer window is finally sparking into life with two significant arrivals expected in Glasgow this week. CeltsAreHere understands that Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Marcelo Saracchi are both due in the city on Wednesday to finalise moves.
Balikwisha, 24, comes in from Royal Antwerp with a deal worth around £5 million being struck between the clubs. The Belgian winger has been on Celtic’s radar for over a year, with Brendan Rodgers keen to add pace and directness to his wide options. At 24, he fits the profile of a player who can make an immediate impact but still has room to develop further.
Meanwhile, Boca Juniors left-back Marcelo Saracchi, 27, is set to arrive on a season-long loan. Crucially, we understand there is no option to buy included in the agreement. Boca were unwilling to entertain that clause, preferring to keep control over the Uruguayan’s long-term future. While it may disappoint some supporters hoping for a permanent solution, Saracchi provides vital backup at left back, and eases the burden on Kieran Tierney, whose game time needs to be managed.
Both players are expected in Glasgow on Wednesday, and the deals are done, pending medicals. Should the medicals progress without issue, they would represent a double boost to Rodgers’ squad depth ahead of a demanding domestic and European campaign.
Balikwisha brings Champions League experience from his time with Antwerp. His ability to play across the front line gives Celtic added flexibility, particularly with the squad stretched by injuries and inconsistency in the attacking department.
Saracchi, capped by Uruguay, has played at a high level across South America and Europe, including spells in Germany and Austria. His aggression, energy and willingness to get forward are attributes Rodgers will look to harness in Celtic’s system.
This window has been a frustratingly slow burn for Celtic supporters, but the expected arrivals of Balikwisha and Saracchi mark a notable step up in activity. With both players on their way to Glasgow, Rodgers looks set to finally get the reinforcements he has been calling for.
