B team stars shine under Ange Postecoglou

Celtic’s B team contingent stood out as the Hoops thrashed SC Wiener Viktoria 7-0 with Johnny Kenny and Rocco Vata among the goals.

It was a welcome sight to see a team run out in green and white hoops this evening as the sun shone down on Ange Postecoglou’s men.

The team that started the match included a number of regular first team players including as well as new signing Alexandro Bernabei.

Although it is difficult to judge players on their performance in a friendly match against what in this case was poor opposition, the academy players gave a very strong account of themselves on the night.

One of the top performers on the night was defender Bosun Lawal who looked like a very calm and composed individual at the back. For a 18-year old, he is a big unit that looked completely assured on the ball.

Since Johnny Kenny arrived in Glasgow in January we haven’t seen too much of the Irishman after he suffered a serious knee injury in late March. He did feature for the B team on a few occasions, and although he isn’t someone who has came through the ranks at the club, the 19-year old is still developing.

His second finish in the match was top drawer with the opposition defender failing to clear his lines after new boy Bernabei whipped the ball in. The Irishman was unlucky not to bag a hat-trick had it not been for Christopher Jullien nipping in and snatching the goal.

The second half saw a number of changes for the Celts with Matthew Anderson, Ben Summers, Rocco Vata, Josh Dede and Owen Moffat all being given a chance to shine.

All looked relatively comfortable and calm on the ball and were playing the type of football Ange Postecoglou expects from his sides with tidy one and two touch football with quick rotations.

Vata made it seven for the Hoops with his calm and composed finish to strike the ball high into the net to cap off a great display in Celtic’s first pre-season game.

By the weekend, more of the regular first team players are likely to return to the side after sitting this game out in the stand. The B team players made a good account of themselves and will likely be given some more game time by the boss.
