Anthony Ralston Set for Important Celtic Role Under Rodgers

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has signalled a more significant role for Tony Ralston next season, providing clarity on the right-back’s future within the squad. This comes as Celtic prepares for the Scottish Cup final on Saturday against Rangers.

Alistair Johnston has been the first-choice right-back for much of the season, with Ralston stepping in whenever needed. This arrangement led to some uncertainty regarding Rodgers’ long-term plans for Ralston. However, Rodgers’ recent comments confirm that Ralston will play a more prominent role next term.

“He will feature more for me next season,” Rodgers confirmed on Celtic YouTube. “Part of this season was that Ali (Johnston) was the first choice. Tony came in and played some games, and Ali had been out for a while, and when he came back, I needed to get him games to get him up to speed. That meant Tony hadn’t played so much.”

Rodgers praised Ralston’s professionalism and readiness, highlighting his standout performance on trophy day, where he provided a brilliant assist for Luis Palma’s winning goal. The manager emphasised Ralston’s dedication to training and his ability to step up when called upon.

“I know he is always ready because if he is not playing in games, his training is the game. So he trains every day, and his standard, his quality, his mentality is like that of a game.”

Rodgers’ comments come at a crucial time as Celtic fans call for significant squad improvements ahead of the new season. The debate continues on whether keeping Ralston as the backup right-back is a prudent move or if the club should aim higher.

Rodgers further explained, “That’s why I can put him in against St Mirren in the last game of the season, and he is running up in the 90th minute making a cross to score the winning goal. Why? Because he trains himself. He is a wonderful example of someone who treats his training like it’s a game so that when he comes in, he is game-ready.”

Ralston was given his start at Celtic by Brendan Rodgers during the Irishman’s first spell in charge — even playing in the champions league.

Ralston’s potential increased involvement next season will be closely watched, especially considering the high standards and ambitions of Celtic supporters. The fans want to see Celtic kick on and add real quality to the team.

As Rodgers prepares his team for the Scottish Cup final, his endorsement of Ralston’s abilities could mean the right back might have a part to play on the day, especially if the game goes to extra time.
