Another Frustrating VAR Moment During Celtic Win

Another SPFL game, another over-intrusive VAR moment. It’s getting boring and repetitive now, with the technology making the game a hard watch, breaking up the play and slowing Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic down.

5th February 2023; McDiarmid Park, Perth, Scotland: Scottish Premiership Football, St Johnstone versus Celtic; Andrew Considine of St Johnstone makes it 1-0 to Celtic in the 14th minute putting the ball into his own net

After every goal that Celtic scored, Greg Aitken on VAR checked, and checked, the goal for any interference that could possibly rule the goal out.

By the time the players were back at the centre circle, ready to resume play, the goal was still being checked!

But, the most frustrating VAR moment of the afternoon was David Turnbull’s injury-time goal. Greg Aitken in VAR checked the strike for three whole minutes for a possible offside; despite Turnbull being miles onside, VAR looked for a body that could possibly be blocking Matthew’s view in the St Johnstone goals, in the sea of players in the box.

It’s slowing the games down and making it frustrating for the fans and players. Sky cameras showed Ange’s disapproval on the touchline, shaking his head and laughing at the wait.
