Ange Postecoglou signing’s future cast into doubt after Tuesday rumour

Ange Postecoglou’s tenure at Celtic was marked by a series of successful signings, but not every acquisition has lived up to expectations.

Alexandro Bernabei, a £3.75 million investment from Lanus, stands out as one of the less successful ventures. As Brendan Rodgers plans a £4 million January move for Estoril’s Tiago Araujo, Bernabei’s time at Celtic appears increasingly uncertain.

Arriving with high hopes and the backing of Postecoglou, Bernabei struggled to find his footing in Celtic’s system. While Greg Taylor thrived as an inverted full-back, a key component of Postecoglou’s strategy, Bernabei couldn’t quite match his technical or defensive prowess. This mismatch has become more pronounced under Brendan Rodgers, who maintains similar tactical principles.

Bernabei’s challenges haven’t been limited to on-pitch performance. Off-field issues, including missing a team meeting, have compounded his struggles. His limited appearances – only three outings this season, with a notable cameo in the 6-0 victory over Aberdeen – highlight his peripheral role in the squad. The decision by Rodgers to leave him out of Celtic’s Champions League roster was a significant indication of his standing in the team.

Now, with The Telegraph reporting Celtic’s interest in Tiago Araujo, it seems Bernabei’s journey with the club may be nearing its end. The potential acquisition of Araujo, a move valued at around £4 million, suggests that Celtic is looking to reinforce their squad, possibly at the expense of Bernabei’s position.
