Ange Postecoglou is a ‘Class Character’ – Dundee Utd Star Admits

Dundee United goalkeeper Mark Birighitti has revealed what Ange Postecoglou said to him after his side suffered a 4-2 defeat at Celtic Park.

The Arabs thought they had managed to nick a point late on in the game after Dylan Levitt’s shot evaded everyone and headed straight into Joe Hart’s net to pull the game level.

There wasn’t much the 31-year old keeper could do about the goal that follow as the Scottish champions conjured up a lovely bit of play that saw Anthony Ralston flick on Matt O’Riley’s corner to find Kyogo to stick the ball past the keeper and send Celtic Park crazy which was quickly followed by a lovely chip from Liel Abada.

The Aussie keeper is hopeful of securing a place in Australia’s squad for the World Cup with the former national team coach Postecoglou offering him words of encouragement after the match.

Birighitti has so far been handed his only cap for his national team by Postecoglou in 2013 in a 4-3 defeat to China but subsequently missed out on the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The squad is to be announced on Monday with Birighitti hoping to join the likes of Aaron Mooy in the squad with the former Central Coast Mariners keeper moving to Scotland to try and improve his chances.

“To get selected for the national team on any occasion let alone a World Cup is a dream come true. That is what any kid growing up back home dreams about – to represent their country. I have been lucky enough to do it once and be capped for the national team,” said Mark Birighitti as quoted by The Scotsman.

“He just said that I had played well and told me to keep my head up and stay positive and that results would turn. It was good of him. Ange is a class character on and off the field.

“I have the utmost respect for him and what he is doing. He has done unbelievably well and I can’t give him enough credit. There are not enough words to describe what a man he is.”

The former Australian manager is not just having an impact on Celtic but also on other sides in the league with St Mirren and Hearts having some Australians amongst their ranks.

Scotland is a great stepping stone for some who possibly want to see their career progress elsewhere.
