Ange Postecoglou Describes Genesis of Celtic’s Viral Goal

Ange Postecoglou must have felt as satisfied as he possibly could with Celtic’s work on Saturday but the Seth goal would’ve been particularly satisfying for the Australian.

A passage of play that lasted for around two minutes with Celtic players passing the ball back and forth, looking for a way through St Johnstone. The bhoys were patient in the build up and when the ball came to Matt O’Riley in the box – the Danish U21 international scored an absolute belter. The goal has gone viral online, and rightly so.

In conversation with Celtic TV, Ange Postecoglou detailed the way his team are evolving: “That’s kind of the end goal. You do these things for a reason and that reason is to kind fo create a foundation for playing the game a certain way. That’s a goal where we kept the ball for quite a while, kept the opposition moving, we were moving.

“There have been other times where we were more direct or on the counter-attack. So it’s not about one prototype of how we’re going to play. The foundation we’ve created is that if the opposition are going to sit off us and give us time to move the ball around then we can and we’ll wait for our opportunity to score.

“If they come and press us we’ll find a more direct way. But as the players get more and more comfortable with the way we want to play, you can see they’re kind of creating their own ways of overcoming oppositions.”

Celtic have shown over the last six weeks they can win a game in many different ways. They can beat the press, but they can also play in a mid block to frustrate an onslaught from tiger oppositions – like we witnessed at Ibrox.

The players know their jobs and roles within the team, it’s a cohesive unit and not a group of individuals.

The Matt O’Riley goal was the icing on the cake for the Hoops on the day. They maintained their six point lead at the top and managed to get another +3 onto the goal difference .

It’s Scottish Cup semi-final time on Sunday before the final league run-in. The Hoops can still win a treble, but they have to make it three in a row against the Ibrox side.
