Sky sports pundit, Chris Sutton, has taken a dig at the SFA, John Beaton and Don Robertson’s handling of a controversial incident involving Celtic player Yang earlier in the season.
The incident, which took place during a match against Hearts at Tynecastle, saw Yang sent off for a high boot, a decision that was later upheld by a VAR panel during its quarterly review.
Contrasting this with a similar incident in the English Premier League, where Liverpool defender Joe Gomez was involved in a comparable high boot situation against Brennan Johnson but was not penalised. VAR reviewed the Gomez incident and concluded that it did not merit a foul, which Sutton highlighted as a demonstration of “common sense” by the officials in the English game.
In Celtic’s case, the red card, combined with a contentious penalty awarded to Hearts, significantly impacted the game that Celtic went onto lose.
It has felt like Celtic have been refereed to a different standard. Common sense is in short supply when it comes to Scottish football and VAR.
