Andy Walker in Fresh VAR Swipe

Former Celtic striker Andy Walker has laid fresh criticism on VAR but also thinks there is too much hatred within Scottish football following death threats to Kevin Clancy.

Walker’s initial scathing of VAR caused Sky to make a public apology to the SFA although he has now hit out with fresh criticism, saying VAR has failed to aid officials this campaign (Go Radio via Daily Record):

“In all honesty, over the course of the season, I don’t think VAR has helped them [referees].

“I think we’re seeing referees make poor decisions in the middle of the park with the knowledge that VAR can get them out of trouble.”

It is fair to say a lot of supporters across Scottish football will agree with what Walker is saying here.

Particularly to Celtic, VAR has not been the kindest but the Hoops remain 12 clear at the top of the table thus it hasn’t had a hugely significant impact.

Nevertheless, Walker thinks it can be used better and that comparisons should be drawn from England:

“We just have to look at what VAR has done for us and I don’t think it has been helpful. I think it can be much better and I’m convinced. I go to as many games south of the border, games are managed differently down there, because there are higher thresholds – even for fouls.”

As well as criticising VAR, Walker also said there is too much destain towards referees:

“There is far too much hatred out there and we have to do better.”

With these recent comments, Walker will be hoping Sky don’t need to apologise however few will disagree with the former Celtic striker.

It will be intriguing to see what contentious calls are made this weekend as a result of VAR.
