As the old saying goes – if you don’t ask, you don’t get but it has to be said, it was an ambitious move by the brass at Inverness to try and host the Scottish Cup final. That was the scenario put to SFA chief Ian Maxwell.
Inverness are in Tier 1 of restrictions and are allowed a maximum of 300 fans inside the ground under government guidelines. The club were thinking they could cash in on that fact and allow the game to be played in their stadium according to SunSport.
For anyone paying attention, this was going to be a non-starter for a number of reasons.
People in higher tiers aren’t supposed to travel to lower tiers unless it’s absolutely necessary. ICT can only host their own fans and aren’t allowed to sell tickets for the away end of the ground.
For the sake of having 300 fans potentially in the stadium, it was a no go.
On December 20, Celtic will take to an empty Hampden, looking to make history amid a backdrop of domestic chaos. The cup which should have been settled back in May will be settled five days before Christmas behind closed doors.
