Ally McCoist is trying to sweep past his former club’s Champions League disappointment this week after they became the worst team to ever play in the competition.
The pundit told SunSport he wasn’t overly concerned about the Champions League results, especially because both Celtic and The Rangers finished bottom. However, his concern is how his old side played against the Scottish Champions and the worry they’re not up to Celtic’s level.
“A bigger concern for me would be Rangers’ level of performance at Celtic Park in a couple of league games.” Ally told The Sun.
“The results in the Champions League have disappointed me, one or two of them have shocked me, but I’m not overly concerned or surprised both teams have finished bottom of the group.”
This is the issue at both clubs when it comes to progressing. Too often you hear fans and pundits just happy to compare one club to the other and that’s the barometer of how well they’re doing or not doing.
It stops the clubs from improving. Celtic were all too happy just to be that bit better than the Ibrox club under Rodgers and didn’t really aspire to anything else.
If Peter Lawwell and the board looked at Europe as the benchmark, the SPFL takes care of itself. Celtic should look at the bigger picture.
Ally wants to be better than Celtic. I want Celtic to be competing at a high level in European competition. By default, we would be better than any SPFL club.
