Alan Shearer, the Premier League’s all time top scorer, has shared his thoughts on the tantalising prospect of the Scottish Premiership champions strutting their stuff in England’s premier footballing arena.

Speaking candidly on The Rest is Football, Shearer couldn’t hide his enthusiasm for the idea, calling it ‘amazing’ to envision the likes of the Bhoys battling it out against England’s finest.

The prospect, as alluring as it is, comes with Shearer’s sobering acknowledgment that this is a fantasy unlikely to ever materialise, to his own evident disappointment.

The reality is stark – as things stand, our team doesn’t possess the financial muscle to duke it out at the top tier of English football. Yet, one can’t help but let the mind wander to a world where Celtic, bolstered by the kind of budget that rivals the heavyweights, would no longer find themselves the whipping boys of European football

Shearer’s said: “With the size of those two giant football clubs. It would only enhance our league for the better. The atmosphere in those grounds is amazing.

“The support they have around the world is fantastic, so they are two giant clubs. Absolutely, it would be brilliant if they could be in the Premier League.” But then comes the stark reality check, “But I don’t think we are ever going to see it – it’s never going to happen.”

Football is changing and while the support has cooled on talk of an EPL future that once upon a time seemed like the holy grail, there has to come a point when the European football structure fundamentally changes.

There’s been talks for years on Atlantic leagues and so forth but nothing has come to fruition. ten or twenty years down the line is Celtic still going to be plying their trade full time in Scottish football, I’d like to think, no.
