It’s being reported by Swiss publication Blick that Fc Basel are toying with the idea of bringing back former striker Albian Ajeti.
However, this financial capacity is far beyond what FCB can afford. During his time at Basel, Ajeti scored 43 goals and made 21 assists in 96 matches, even becoming the Super League’s top scorer in 2018.
The Swiss publication has claimed Albian doesn’t need to fret over his financial future. He secured a lucrative Premier League contract when he transferred from FC Basel to West Ham United in the summer of 2019 for a cool £12.5 million. Moreover, at Celtic, his earnings reportedly round up to about £1.2 million net per year.
Since Ajeti’s departure from FCB, he’s fallen into football obscurity. His stint at West Ham was brief, only playing 399 minutes and being marked as one of the biggest transfer flops in the club’s history. His move to Celtic hasn’t been much better. Despite a near £5 million transfer fee, Ajeti managed to score only nine goals in 48 competitive matches.
Last season, Ajeti was loaned out to Sturm Graz. He only managed to score four goals in 23 appearances, a performance that didn’t impress fans in Austria.
Interestingly, Basel director David Degen, who was in the FCB squad when Ajeti debuted for the club in April 2014, might be well aware of Ajeti’s situation. The two had played together in a memorable Europa League 0-0 home game against Red Bull Salzburg. Ajeti’s long-standing connection with Basel, dating back to his childhood, seems to have sparked interest from the club.
FCB officials, wishing to incorporate more local talents, reinforced this sentiment by recently signing Dominik Schmid.
It appears that Ajeti does not wish to forego his current earnings at Celtic and is holding out for an even more lucrative offer from abroad.
The Swiss flop is not in a rush to make a decision. At Celtic, he is under contract for another year, giving him ample time to weigh up his options.
