Kristoffer Ajer believes Celtic have brought quality to the club this summer by signing new goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas. Speaking to the Celtic View, the Norweigan centre back was delighted to see Barkas through the door and recalls the game against AEK Athens where the goalkeeper played well against Celtic.
“It’s great to have someone of Vasilis’ quality in the squad,” said Ajer.
“I remember he played against us in the Champions League qualifiers a couple of years ago and he was really good. Having another quality keeper will make a big difference to the squad.
“Scott Bain was really good during pre-season and showed his qualities so having another top keeper will help keep the competition in that position high just like it is in the rest of the squad.
“I’m sure they’ll build a good partnership and that will only benefit the squad as a whole. Woodsy does amazing work with all the keepers and Vasilis will only improve by working under someone like Woodsy.”
The departure of Craig Gordon and Fraser Forster necessitated Celtic sign a high calibre goalkeeper this summer. The two former goalkeepers have been pivotal in the nine in a row run and it will be strange to see a new face in goals.
All going well, Barkas SHOULD make his debut at Rugby Park on Saturday. The player was left on the bench for the Hamilton game having only signed a few days before the game. Having over a week of training with Stephen Woods under his belt, it’s only a matter of time.
Celtic got off to the best possible start on Sunday with a 5-1 win over Hamilton which quickly propelled them to the top of the table after matchday one.
