Adam Idah, Kasper Dolberg and Kieran Bowie – Mark Hendry on Celtic Transfer Shambles

Celtic’s summer transfer window has been shambolic, to say the least, but this weekend brought some sort of optimism for fans that it may end well.

Or, at least, it did for a few short minutes on Friday evening.

Adam Idah cost the club £9.5million 12 months ago and, whatever you think of the Irishman, it’s safe to say he has not lived up to the price tag.

The striker would likely hold his hands up and accept that as being the case himself, and when Swansea City knocked on the door on Friday morning with an offer, Celtic were stunned. For context, the club were not anticipating any sort of interest in the 24-year-old.

Idah, too, thought a big campaign was coming for him as the club’s main striker and was not looking for an exit.

But a near-£7m offer from the Swans was enough to convince the Hoops to greenlight the big man’s move, shake his hand and thank him on his way out as he passed his medical with the Championship club.

At least, it would have been. But Brendan Rodgers finally decided to make a stand on refusing to sanction an exit before having a replacement in the door. But even that stand didn’t last long with Idah being put through the second part of his Swansea medical as Celtic and Rangers bored fans to tears on Sunday.

It was strange to see Rodgers make the stand in his Friday press conference when, let’s not forget, this is the same manager who didn’t mind too much when Kyogo left for Rennes without a like-for-like forward coming in for him.

Nicolas Kuhn was also not replaced before he moved to Como, but perhaps the money was too good to refuse, where the German was concerned.

Kasper Dolberg is the man Celtic want to come in and take Idah’s jersey from Anderlecht. Our sources tell us around £8m could be enough to get the deal done. It may turn out to be more than that, in the end, as there are rivals for his signature in Monchengladbach.

If the boardroom had any self-respect, they would pay the asking price and be done with it.

And another thing.

Kieron Bowie of Hibs has seemingly emerged as a transfer target for Celts. I’d be stunned if that came to fruition.

The way I see this one, Hibs would look for more than £4m for their player who has a lot of potential. Celtic, meanwhile, might consider a move for a player from the Scottish Premiership an easier deal to do, which has cost them in the past.

They won’t get Bowie for the £1m they landed Luke McCowan for.

Celtic’s money-men need to get real and do it fast. The transfer market has changed. They need to do the same.
