After a deal looked likely to be concluded with minimal fuss that would take Jonny Hayes from Pittodrie to Celtic Park. a late bid from Cardiff has thrown a spanner in the works.
While the player himself would prefer a move to the Scottish champions, Aberdeen has now told Celtic to up their offer to match Cardiff’s bid of around £1.2million plus add-ons if they want to get their man. Ryan Christie could also still be part of any deal.
Speaking earlier this week, Hayes seemed relaxed about his future.
He said: “We’ve obviously known about it (Celtic’s interest) for a while now. There have been a few things developing with the club.
“Whatever happens over the summer will happen.”
This has been met with somewhat of a tepid response for Celtic as they see the Hayes as a cost effective utility player who could do a job for the team. Celtic hadn’t envisioned forking out over £1million for the Irishman.
The manager and the board are now weighing up their options and will decide quickly if they will meet the new valuation of the player.
Should Celtic put up the extra cash for Hayes?
