‘A Really Exciting Player’ – Ex-Celtic Defender Tips Benjamin Nygren to Thrill Fans

Benjamin Nygren’s path to Celtic has taken him from IFK Gothenburg in Sweden, through spells in Belgium and the Netherlands, before finding his feet in Denmark with Nordsjaelland. It was there the winger finally settled and started to shine, and now he’s set for the next step in his career, the Champions League with Celtic.

Brendan Rodgers looks to have landed a smart deal at just under £2 million, including add-ons.

Nordsjaelland are well known for developing young players, and Nygren is the latest success story from their system. He arrived with little fanfare, but under the club’s guidance, he grew into one of the most talked-about wingers in Denmark.

Former Celtic defender Marc Rieper knows the Danish scene well and believes the Hoops have picked up a bargain.

Nygren stood out last season with his direct play, long-range shooting, and clever link-up work. He was among the league’s top scorers, combining speed and skill to cause defences problems. Now, Celtic fans will be watching closely to see how he handles Scottish football.

Rodgers will be hoping Nygren brings that same attacking spark to Parkhead. At 22, he fits the mould of a player with potential and room to grow.

With domestic trophies to chase and a Champions League qualifiers ahead, it’s a big chance for the Swedish international to make his mark.

Rieper said: (RecordSport), “This is a really good signing for Celtic. Nygren was one of the top players in Denmark last season. A really exciting player.

“Nordsjaelland are unbelievable at developing players. They do it every year.

“They are probably the best in Europe at developing. They bought Nygren when he was an under 21 for Sweden but not really with a big reputation. They just nursed him and made him what he is now.

“Now he is a full international with his country and doing well for them as well.

“I think Celtic have done really well to sign Nygren. I have actually been a bit surprised that Nordsjaelland have been able to keep him for so long.

“His contract was close to running out so they couldn’t wait and let him lose for free.

“They opted to keep him last season when there was some interest and try to get in the top six.

“They managed that. Now it’s time for him to move on.

“Nygren was in the top seven or eight goalscorers in the Danish league last season. He has a good technique from distance.

“As a winger he goes past people because he has pace.

“He has good skills with the ball and is really neat passer, good at making connections with other players. He’s an exciting player. I think the Celtic fans will really like him.”

Nygren arrives with a growing reputation and the stats to back it up. His goal threat from wide areas and ability to get past defenders will give Celtic another option out wide. If he can carry over his Danish form, he’ll be a real asset.

Adjusting to Scottish football can take time, but Nygren’s grounding in a strong development set-up will help. He’s been playing regular first-team football and looks ready for the next challenge.

Rodgers has spoken before about adding quality in the wide areas, and Nygren looks like a player who fits the style. He’s not just about flair, his work rate and end product made him one of Sweden’s best young players last season.

For Celtic, it’s a signing with upside. And for Nygren, it’s a chance to test himself on a bigger stage and make a real impact in Glasgow.
