Joey Barton came swaggering up to Scotland to play for the newly promoted Ibrox club back in 2016 promising to put Celtic in their place.
The Englishman’s signing was hailed as a coup for Scottish football, but Celtic fans saw past that all day long.
Barton claimed he was the best player in the league and would also make himself known to Scott Brown in the first Glasgow Derby.
Fast forward to the first meeting between the two sides in the SPFL and Barton was embarrassed from start to finish. Not looking at Scott Brown directly during the pre-match hand shake. Being totally over run and out of his depth, his biggest contribution on that day was to pick the ball out of the back of the net. Celtic won 5-1 on the day.
A hat trick from Moussa Dembele and a goal a piece from Scott Sinclair and Stuart Armstrong blew away Joey and the Ibrox club.
It was only six months into his Ibrox career when the Englishman would be sent packing by his employers. Not living up to any of the hype.
Speaking about it now to the Sun, Bristol Rovers boss Barton is clearly not over the embarrassment: “Every time I read a Scottish paper it’s a case of ‘Flop Barton’. It’s the only blot on my copybook as a player.
“Maybe there’s only one thing for it and that means I’ll have to go back to Scotland and take charge of Hibs, Aberdeen or Hearts — and ram it down the Old Firm’s throats.”
What an absolute eejit.
