SPFL React To Super League Plans Which Could Involve Celtic

The SPFL have reacted to plans announced today by A22 Sports Management to revive the doomed European Super League.

Fans reacted with disgust to plans drawn up April 2021 to create a European Super League which was then very quickly scrapped.

A new proposal which emerged today would involve between 60-80 teams and there would be no permanent member clubs. The eligibility of clubs to participate would be assessed on sporting performance [BBC Sport].

It’s no great surprised to see yet another company try to revive this idea and tempt teams away from the Champions League as two years ago proved that clubs ownerships could be persuaded.

Clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus are still pushing for there to be changes and this sort of structure would open to the door to a far greater number of teams as it would guarantee 14 matches per season alongside playing domestic football.

One of those sides which could be considered is Celtic as a former winner of the European Cup and a club with a huge fan base. Invitations have been sent out to 50 clubs but the SPFL have now issues a response to the chat around the idea.

“We have seen today’s statement from A22 Sports Management, which is seeking to replace UEFA’s Champions League with a new European Super League. Our understanding is that the Court of Justice of the European Union will be ruling on UEFA’s decision later this year and we await the outcome of that case with interest,” said an SPFL spokesperson as quoted by the [Daily Record].

It will be interesting to see what the outcome of the court ruling shall be as it could potentially change the structure of European football.
