Callum McGregor’s Hampden Penalty Verdict

Celtic captain Callum McGregor has given his reaction to the claim that Kilmarnock should have been awarded a penalty at the weekend in the Viaplay Cup semi final clash.

The skipper has insisted that there was “nothing in” the appeal for a penalty and that the officials had made the right call. The hysteria surrounding the decision has reached new levels.

Ange Postecoglou’s side booked their place in the final next month after a 2-0 victory over fellow Premiership side Kilmarnock after goals from Daizen Maeda and Giorgos Giakoumakis.

For the most part, the game appeared to be badly effected by the weather conditions as the rain and wind swirled round the national stadium as the pitch became even more unplayable as there were large patches appearing on the grass.

By the end of the match, the Hoops had the ball in the back of the net on four occasions but two of the goals were ruled for offside as many questioned the ruling on Reo Hatate’s goal as it was similar to the incident involving Liel Abada against Dundee United.

Before Giakoumakis struck late on which could well be his parting gift in a Celtic jersey, he was at the centre of some controversy in the box as Joe Wright went down under pressure in the box.

Willie Collum allowed for play to continue and the incident didn’t appear to be checked by VAR which left the Killie players and staff furious.

Callum McGregor believes that Collum made the right call and that it was what you would expect in that particular situation.

“I don’t think so. When the ball gets thrown in the box like that, both teams are going to be physical to try and gain an advantage. I don’t think there was anything in it,” said McGregor as quoted by Football Scotland.
