Dermot Gallagher Has Say on Celtic Park Controversy

Many Celtic fans were left amazed when David Dickinson pointed to the spot after looking at the cameras with a potential handball from Alexandro Bernabei.

Retired former referee Dermot Gallagher gives an insight into the big talking points over the weekend on Sky Sports News every Monday and had his say on the decision.

He agreed with the decision to give a spot kick and detailed why he believed that it was right for Dickinson to give a penalty.

Dundee United forward Steven Fletched headed the ball towards goal which was blocked by Bernabei’s hand in what looked like a natural position as the Argentinian had jumped in the air.

At the game, there was little appeals from the United players under the referee halted play much to the frustration of Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou.

Whether the decision is going for or against the former Socceroos boss, he would rather a decision is made instantly instead of players having to hang around.

There was a total of five minutes injury time added on to the first-half on Saturday which completely took the zap out of the match.

Many Celtic fans would prefer for there to be a clearer ruling on the handball rule as the Hoops were wrongfully denied a penalty at Tynecastle weeks ago with the incident not even being checked by officials.

“The player will say he’s got his back to the ball,” said Dermot Gallagher speaking on Sky Sports.

“But we saw with Dan Burn the other week, if you arm is up that high and the ball strikes you in the box coming back across the goal, the referees have been consistent on this; they give handball.”

Going by that explanation, it means that if the ball hits your hand at all in the box it will be given as a penalty which doesn’t sit right with many.
