‘Awful’ – BT Pundit Jumps to Celtic’s Defence

CELTIC conceded two penalties in the first twenty minutes of their match against Real Madrid.

Both penalties came from handballs, which allowed Los Blancos to put themselves two goals up. That’s the frustrating part for Celtic fans; the home side didn’t have to break a sweat before they had a two-goal lead.

BT had Steve McManaman and Stuart Armstrong in the studio to analyse the match, with both pundits in agreement that Celtic were hard done by.

The former Real Madrid winger admitted that Celtic were hard done by, live on BT Sports 4, the pundit gave his thoughts.

“I personally think the two Real Madrid penalties are awful, rubbish. They spoil the game, they’re terrible decisions. Yes, the ball strikes the arm on both of them but if Fede Valverde hits it properly it avoids the defender completely.

Celtic have been really unlucky. Yes, it hits his arm and it’s in the penalty area, but there’s just no real reasoning behind the play itself. I was really disappointed with it.

“(Second penalty) Why is VAR getting involved? We know it’s hits his hand but it was going 20 yards wide. O’Riley has to defend his goal, you can’t expect to run across with his arms by his side like a mannequin. It beggars belief some of these decisions, it really does.”

The penalty that Jenz gave away was a stonewaller, in my opinion. He’s used his arms to make himself bigger and has made a swiping motion towards the ball, there are no real complaints, and I’m surprised that McManaman believes this was harsh.

The O’Riley one, I think, was harsh for a few reasons. The ball looks like it’s going well out and closer to being a shy than a goal. O’Riley is on the move and can’t move his arms out of the way, with the ball being only a couple of yards away. The referee made her decision on the pitch, and there didn’t to seem to be much point in VAR getting its say. It’s a harsh call, and one that could’ve gone both ways.
